This week, to end our procedure writing topic, we have been creating our own games. I made a paper board game. My theme is the back yard.

My speech topic is kiwis. I chose this topic because to let people know that kiwis are in danger and to protect them. When I presented it I felt happy. What I did well was I used expression and a bit of eye contact. I could have been a little bit louder.

Why are kiwis important? 

Do you know why Kiwis are so important? Kiwis are important because they are our New Zealand icon. A kiwi is a flightless bird with small wings, a long beak and they are nocturnal. Kiwis are important to us because they are native, we as New Zealanders are often called kiwis, we see kiwis everywhere like on money, sports teams and posters for New Zealand. 

Firstly kiwis are native birds to New Zealand. Kiwis have been in New Zealand for hundreds of years,  before people were here. Some legends say that some Kiwis had wings and they disappeared when people arrived. Lots of kiwis are in danger and are dying because they are being attacked by dogs and wild animals. 

Secondly I think that kiwis are important because our nick name is Kiwis.  Some sports teams are called kiwis. Kiwis are known to be friendly, loyal people, just like the bird. Kiwis have been friendly people for hundreds of years.

Finally the kiwi symbol or a picture of the kiwi is used as our national icon. We see the kiwi on our money. Our currency is sometimes called the ‘kiwi dollar. The Kiwi is also used on posters for advertising or as a mascot. Koru the Kiwi spreads important messages about water safety.

I believe that we have to look after our kiwis and protect them from dying and getting extinct. We need to protect them from cars, predators, dogs and other things. If kiwis weren’t alive we wouldn’t be able to be called kiwis.
